Finally after almost a month of getting sick twice and working our tails off we planted our winter garden today. First we ate this breakfast: It's leftover cheddar bay biscuits toasted, with green chiles, scrambled eggs, a little havarti and homemade salsa, garnished with cilantro. YUM!
Here are the pictures of the garden, freshly planted. We have collards, rainbow swiss chard, heirloom spinach, three kinds of lettuce, siamese basil and cilantro. We also planted marigolds and snapdragons.
Eric watering the freshly planted veggies:
Eric put up chicken wire to keep out one particular varmint who likes to jump up into the pots to sit on the window sill.
This picture is of one side of the garden. Some of the plants are old, some are new.And here is the other side: (not the best picture)
I am the varmint! Hahaha! Ugh, it's hot out here.

Five (plus 1) things I am grateful for today
1. Today is Eric's birthday! So glad he was born! Happy Birthday Eric and Jim!
2. Four mile walk with Clover and a zillion tiny lizards doing push ups
3. Started a new book that I can't put down called The Dirty Life about farming. Abby, you would really dig this one too!
4. I think I may have won someone over who I thought was impossible.
5. E's birthday dinner at Sushi Garden, yum!
6. When I called 911 for a patient today who had fallen and was locked in her apartment, I was so totally grateful for how fast they arrived and how nice they were.

Tiny Clover and Five (+1) things
Here are a few pictures I've taken this weekend of my friend, Tiny Clover.
These are a few things I am grateful for today:
1. I am halfway through Barnheart which I started yesterday, another book about homesteading by Jenna Woginrich. It is the ultimate escape for me to just get lost in chickens and growing food and the idea of spending so much time outside. This book is a memoir of this twenty-something's experience of starting her own homestead while working a 9-5 job. It's so inspiring. Abby, have you read this?
2. All weekend Clover has stayed by my side (or in my arms) while I've dealt with this cough/sickness. (You can see why all of my pictures are of her, I haven't been outside the house much since Wednesday!) I guess we'll be planting the winter garden next weekend, sigh.
3. Today Cynthia came over for an art date. As always being around her is so inspiring. She had made me an art journal/multimedia sketchpad thingy of awesomeness and a really fun piece of art. We had such a nice time, ate those raisin bran cookies I made yesterday and drank iced tea, made some art and then went for Thai food when we got hungry.
4. I feel a lot better today.
5. I am craving veggies and Eric suggested this morning that we go to Sweet Tomatoes for dinner. I think that's a pretty great idea. I always eat two plates of salad there and then a few bites of this and that. I'm usually so full after all that salad that I don't have room for much else. Mmm, salad!!!
6. A letter came in the mail yesterday from my dear friend Abby, all the way from Vermont! I love getting letters from her because they often involve poems, recipes, pictures, etc. and are full of info about her life. Thanks Abby!

Five (+4) things I am grateful for today
1. The tickle in my throat has given way to other symptoms. I swear the tickle is the worst part. So glad that's over.
2. Another day staying home sick. I'm grateful to my boss for seeing my patients.
3. Catching up on sleep. It's silly that "they" say you can't catch up, of course you can.
4. A little time doing art
5. Watched "Fierce Grace" a documentary about Ram Dass and his experience with a stroke. It was inspiring. I felt like I got to know him in a different way than as an author/two dimensional spiritual figure.
6. E brought us home Chinese takeout for dinner. He also picked up my prescriptions from the pharmacy so I could stay in bed.
7. I received really efficient and good healthcare this morning. I started three meds tonight so I'm hoping this sinusitis/bronchitis goes AWAY.
8. A sweet email from my uncle
9. I read an interesting interview between Bill Moyers and Pema Chodron. Here is the link. She is one of my heroes.

Five things I am grateful for today
1. I stayed home from work because what I thought was allergies turned out to be a resurgence of my cold from a couple of weeks ago. I am grateful for the time to rest.
2. I did a tiny bit of art between naps.
3. Clover, my snugglebug, napped with me.
4. A nice, home cooked dinner with Eric
5. Tomorrow is Friday (though I am on call this weekend.)

Five (plus one) things I am grateful for today
1. We collected and bought some food for a patient's partner and took it to his house.
2. A little bit of art after work, combining old photos with paint and handmade paper collage and writing. It feels wonderful and indulgent and like a long last friend. I am so happy to be creating just to create.
3. Morning and evening walks with Clover
4. Spaghetti with super-duper lean grass fed ground beef, and salad, one of the best spaghetti dinners ever. I think it might be because I put herbs, garlic and veggie boullion in the water with the pasta. I hope the leftovers make it to lunch tomorrow, it was so good I might have to eat it for breakfast!
5. In the mail my mom sent me these cute halloween gloves with claws on the fingertips. I love them.
6. I am listening to Jack Kornfield's After the Ecstasy, the Laundry in my car. I am on the last disc of eight, I have so enjoyed it, especially the last few cds.
Goodnight.

Lucky seven things I am grateful for today
1. A lovely walk with Tiny Clover and then weights and abs at the gym, a good combo. Everyone was happy with it!
2. Today I did joint visits with Stephanie, my friend and the social worker at my hospice. It was so much fun--together we bring out patients' senses of humor more than either of us on our own. Nice to see them laughing, nice to laugh with them.
3. Stephanie bought me an iced tea at Starbucks, it was their green tea and passion tea mixed together. Oh wow, it was delicious.
4. After work I did art for a couple of hours and ended up getting so involved in my project that I missed Yamuna Body Rolling. It felt good to be so inspired and absorbed.
5. Wendy ROCKED the MCAT. I knew she would, but it's great to hear the results for certain. YAY Wendy! Your hard work all summer preparing plus your beautiful brain made us all proud!
6. For dinner E and I had a fall salad: baby lettuces, a jazz apple, candied pecans that his mom made and gave us last Christmas and an apple cider vinaigrette.
7. A half hour of meditation that was totally relaxing

Five (x2) things I am grateful for today
1. I just got a very sweet and encouraging email message from my dance teacher.
2. An awesome dance class that raised my spirits
3. A couple of hours painting/collaging/writing in a new art journal
4. This is going to sound strange and kind of gross but I mixed a soft boiled egg with homemade salsa and ate it with chips as a snack. Holy cow it was AMAZING.
5. A nice phone chat with Wendy
6. Wandering around downtown and getting dinner with Mead
7. Eric
8. Clover
9. Not being on call
10. Today it was cool enough to do art in my studio. All summer it is too hot to really hang out in there.

Catching up
Sometimes I get so busy with work that I don't make time to swing by and record my gratitude list. Here are some recent things I am thankful for:
It's fall. The mornings have a slight crispness to them and the evenings are far cooler. I am so happy about this! Tucson in the fall, winter and spring are wonderful!
Tuesday was Clover's one year anniversary of living with us. We celebrated, of course. We went for a six mile walk in the morning, spent lots of time together (for a work day) and gave her presents at night. Here is a picture of our tiny friend in her homemade party hat: Don't worry, I only made her wear the hat for the picture then she promptly pulled it off.
We bought seeds last weekend to plant the winter garden: collards, three kinds of lettuce, spinach, swiss chard and some new cilantro as the old cilantro went to seed. (and I forgot to collect the seeds, duh) We'll plant it next weekend as we learned last week that mid-late September is actually best for planting greens.
Today I am going to my favorite (and only) dance class then Mead and I are meeting on 4th avenue to walk downtown and get dinner. YAY!
At 2pm there's a lecture at Harlow's Nursery about growing tomatoes in Tucson. I think I'll be attending. We thought it was yesterday so we showed up and listened to a whole lecture on growing sweet peas. Neither of us really care all that much about sweet peas but I think we might grow some just because we sat through the 45 minute lecture (which was interesting anyway).
E and I had a nice date day yesterday. We went to sushi, went to the lecture at Harlow's, watched little Battlestar Galactica, did a crossword puzzle and relaxed, just what we both needed. Clover also got two walks yesterday. As I said, it's fall! It's so nice to be able to spend time outside again.
I just finished a really great book about homesteading as a hobby and DIY goodness. My chicken fever is alive and well. I just wish work would slow down a touch so I could have more time to spend around the house. There are so many things I would love to grow and do. I am also enjoying this writer's blog: Cold Antler Farm.
My work friends are very kind and supportive. As are my other friends, thanks guys. Eric in particular has been very nurturing as I struggle a bit to keep up with a work schedule that frequently overwhelms me. I am hoping that someday soon we will hire an on-call nurse so that I can work my forty hours and call it good.
Last night I slept SO well.
This week's menu is all planned out and posted on the fridge. I am most excited for tomorrow: herb chicken, roasted cauliflower and salad. Yum.
It feels good to be organized.
Being healthy and happy
A job that supports me
Inspiration
Fruity iced tea
On cool nights Clover is even more snuggly.
Wishing for: more patience, time to bake some millet bread, a quieter mind, clarity, to grow all of my own greens this winter, easeful communication, closeness, and a few chickens. Wishing you a good Sunday, full of what you love best.

Five (+1) things I am grateful for today
Background info: I caught a cold on Friday.
1. Upon hearing that I am sick my nursing assistant, Debbie, (don't worry, she calls me "her nurse" as much as I call her "my assistant") told me she couldn't wait to get home and make her "famous, magical chicken soup that really is the very best, everyone thinks so." I protested as I would like her to spend her weekend relaxing but she said this would let her do one of her favorite things and procrastinate other things she doesn't feel like doing, plus then she would have plenty of it for her freezer. She also said it takes two days to make. I feel so lucky and so loved. It's really hard living away from my family, and when people make these kinds of gestures it really touches my heart.
2. Unfortunately Eric is also sick, but the nice part of that is that we are just lying around relaxing together. We spent all day yesterday watching Battlestar Galactica episodes. I generally am not a big fan of sci-fi but now he has me hooked on this show!
3. I am really grateful to get sick over a three day weekend so I don't have to call in and have my boss scrambling to see my patients. Hopefully I'll be well enough on Tuesday to go back to work with my usual energy level and not be contagious. (I am on call tomorrow for 24 hours, and I am also hopeful that I won't have to make any visits.)
4. That book I started is SO GOOD. I wish he went into a little more depth on certain subjects but what is said feels almost as if it is taken directly from my thoughts on how healthcare is and how it should be. It's really insightful and puts words to my values and hopes around taking care of patients and their families.
5. It feels so good to catch up on rest. I feel really relaxed despite my illness, or maybe because of it.
6. A new yoga studio opened about a mile from our house. I just found it because they are having a Groupon for 10 classes for $29. It's in the same complex as the Trader Joe's and also really close to my work, how convenient! When the place I go for my stretch and Yamuna Body Rolling classes offered their Groupon, I was hooked! I'm still going at least twice a week for stretch and Yamuna. It will be nice to add a yoga class to my weekly regimen. Considering my hypermobile joints I have a hard time finding classes where I feel really safe. I'm always looking for teachers who really understand physiology and can help me find my way to be safe in my body. One of the things I love about Becca, my stretch teacher, is that she also has hypermobile joints and has used pilates and stretching to protect her body against future dislocations. She really gets my fear and also lets me know what is good and not so good for me. It's also inspiring to know someone who has had my same issues and overcame them. I am so grateful for her knowledge. I hope that Mindful Yoga Studio (what a great name!) will have at least a teacher or two who I'll be comfortable with.
