1. I am about half way done making the healthy snack packs that I am bringing to sell at my booth at the Flagstaff Yoga Festival. Kevin came over tonight to help me put trail mix and crackers into ziplocks. SO grateful for the help!
2. A wonderful massage
3. I ate yummy healthy leftovers all day.
4. I am starting to get excited about this weekend...going to Flagstaff for the marketing workshop geared towards people in the wellness/spirituality industries. I'm not sure what I'll do with what I learn, but I am excited anyway. Plus I am already meeting the people attending through Facebook. It will be fun to spend the weekend with a bunch of yoga teachers and alternative healing practitioners.
5. Two weeks from now all of this hubbub will be over. The workshop, the yoga festival... and then I am going to rest. I am very excited for the workshop and the festival, don't get me wrong...but I am also very ready for some rest. I want to enjoy reading books, cooking, and just hanging around. Plus I miss my friends. I am looking forward to being less productive outside of work.

Five things I am grateful for today
1. Last night I danced out my stress from this crazy weekend in the living room. Then I gave myself a facial. Then I had a sandwich. When E came home from work we hung around for awhile too. It was a good night.
2. I slept in until 10:15am. I am not usually a late sleeper but I was SO tired I really needed it.
3. Today I bought all kinds of awesome groceries: white peaches and nectarines, Tillamook sharp cheddar, kombucha tea, blueberries and strawberries, all sorts of favorite-y stuff. The fridge, pantry, fruit bowls and freezer are all full! I am very grateful to have enough to eat. I wish, wish, wish that everyone did.
4. Tonight for dinner I made all of my favorite things that Margarita, my host mom in the Dominican Republic, used to make. Rice cooked with corn, this special eggplant dish, beans, chicken, salad and a plate of sliced avocado. I am waiting for Eric to come by so we can eat! (I must confess that I bought a rotisserie chicken and that the beans are leftover.)
5. Tomorrow is another day off to enjoy. I hoped to make it yoga today but am just too worn out. Hopefully tomorrow.

My name is Roofrauff Scipio Spellmonster
I am smiling because I have a special marrow bone. I also have an eye booger, but I don't care about things like that.
It is so delicious I am trying to eat it all at once!
I am grateful for many things: My roommates pet me and scratch me all the time. The girl one always tries to hug me too because she loves me so much, she's a little weird but whatever. We go for walks, everyday when it's cool out, and just sometimes in the summer. I am grateful to be healthy again, for a long time I couldn't even go for walks. But I have a strong spirit so I made it through. I love scrambled eggs. Yep, life is good when you are a Roofrauff.
Lucky seven things I am grateful for today
1. This weekend has been...well...rough. I am so darn grateful that it's finally over. Phew.
2. I am working on being grateful for a ton of overtime. Right now I am really just relieved about #1 item on this list.
3. Monday and Tuesday are my days off! I am so ready to catch up on relaxing, cooking, and yoga.
4. Friday night's show at the Create Cafe really rocked! My wonderful friends and a bunch of my coworkers showed up. Eric helped me a ton. The display looked great (pictures to follow!) The cafe owner was wonderful and even commissioned some work for the cafe! And I sold a bunch of my work! Yippee! It was such a great night.
5. Yesterday morning before things got crazy I really enjoyed my work.
6. This morning I took a break from my work for a few minutes to swing by the farmers' market. Our kitchen is full of heirloom tomatoes, funky eggplants, summer squash, fresh cheeses, tortillas, pita bread and jalapeno/cilantro hummus.
7. Tim McGraw, his good songs are so good!

Adventures in a small border town
Yesterday I was driving around south of here. Yes, there is still something south of us besides Mexico! The house I went to was 10 minutes from the border. My destination was 21 miles off the freeway into an area I dare call lush by Southern Arizona standard! There were tons of trees, shrubs, flowers and of course cactus. I even saw a man made pond stocked with bass. Go figure. Here are a few pictures that I took on my drive:
Pesos huh? I've never seen a sign like that before in the U.S.
I asked for directions in this cafe. It was like stepping into another time. It made me want to stay awhile and hang out with the families eating there.

We are legal. Moo.
Nothing like a day like this to turn up the staticky country station, smell last night's rain and be happy.

Some stuff I am grateful for these days
My trip home to Oregon was wonderful. It was great to be with my family and the trees and water. Happy 90th Birthday to my Grampy! And Happy 65th Anniversary to my Grammy and Grampy!
The food out there in Oregon is SO good. I was spoiled rotten, yes I was. Thanks Mama for baking me special banana bread and making sure everything I ate was delicious. You are the best.
Now it's good to be home with my boys. It's stormy tonight and little Roofrauff is being his cutest lap dog self. He fell asleep in my arms a little while ago. Mmm, creature of my heart.
I met a very sweet dog named Lily today. She's a chihuahua mix, blond and very soft with kind brown eyes. She is very good friends with the man I admitted to hospice. She stays by his side whenever he is hurting and snuggles him. Unfortunately she lives in a house with six other dogs--her owner (the patient's daughter) is a nurturer and just can't say no when a doggie needs a home. But Lily isn't good friends with one of the other dogs, a smaller chihuahua, so they are thinking about giving her away as she was recently added to the family. She might end up being a good pal for RR. More likely nothing will come of it, either way it was a pleasure to meet her, she jumped up into my chair and sniffed all over my face. I like that. Little puppy sniffs, how sweet. I never really liked chihuahuas until I met Eric. He taught me that there are nice ones, I had them all pegged as yappy incontinent twerps. Not so, it turns out. Lily, for one, is a continent empath.
Tonight my friend Kevin and I went out for dinner and then played Scrabble. Here's a picture of him thinking hard about his next move while protecting RR from thunder:

Eric has been helping me a lot with my display for the Create Cafe. It's going to be so neat! We found two old doors with peeling paint on them. E drilled screws into them so I can hang my collages on the doors. They look really cool--the old doors with the frames that have a similarly weathered look to them. Then some work will hang on the rusty corrugated metal. E is also making me a sandwich board sign for the yoga festival to advertise my booth to those walking by. I'll be taking pictures of all of these things and posting them later.
Thunder and lightning and lots of rain
Cashew chicken and veggies for lunch--I am trying to eat more veggies, more fresh food. Sometimes when I am doing a lot of art plus working full time, I stop cooking and the food I eat isn't as healthy. I am trying to turn that around now! I am hoping to go to the farmers' market this weekend and get some great local stuff!
Okay, I'm off to rest now. Night night, Lovely World.

Five things I am grateful for today
1. Exercise really does help with stress.
2. Watermelon
3. My mom
4. Eric just brought me a present from the dollar store: insect repellent bracelets with citronella and geranium oil. Sweet.
5. I'm going to go curl up with my book now. Maybe draw on an index card too.

Five things I am grateful for today
1. A new blue shirt, oh how I love my new blue shirt!
2. Yoga class (same teacher as Sunday afternoon, aka my favorite!)
3. Dinner/crafts with MeadMier. We had ginger tofu bento boxes at Yoshimatsu! If I have to get all of these crafts done, it sure is nice to do it in good company! Not that I am complaining, I LOVE CRAFTS! That being said, when this festival is over, I think I might take a little break, depending on how I feel then...
4. Mead made me the most beautiful necklace as a trade for a frame with bottle caps that she gave her mama for Mother's Day. The necklace she made has different shades of blue and I just love it.
5. When I got to yoga class this afternoon the teacher (Laura) said she was surprised to see me on a Monday and I told her I was feeling kinda grumpy so I thought I should swing by for her class. She offered me a hug which I would never turn down! When she hugged me she started snorting in my ear like a dog! She said she was sure dog breathing would make me feel better because when her dogs do it to her it always helps. Oh wow, it was so sweet and I couldn't stop laughing because we really aren't friends yet and I was so surprised! (By the way, my grumpiness dissipated then and by the end of class I felt much more calm and happy. I love yoga.)

Five things I am grateful for today
1. Ooo, y'all should see the pictures Mead took of my art! They are GREAT! Here is one of my favorites:

2. Yoga class this morning
3. Crafternoon with Mead--she took pictures and then played with them while I spray painted frames and then finished making hair clips.
4. A good workout at the gym, what made it good? you ask... Eric replaced my ipod battery for me today so I was able to enjoy a full episode of Private Practice while doing cardio and then listen to music while doing abs and weights. Yippee! Thanks Baby!
5. Speaking of Eric, he stopped by for dinner tonight. I made: teriyaki chicken meatballs, broccolini, artichoke hearts with teriyaki sauce and a salad. We heart veggies.

Saturday's list, posted on Sunday
I am SO tired! So tired that I keep lying there in my bed and not sleeping. Let's see if instead of counting sheep I can count my blessings.
1. Eric made me an awesome lunch today! He made corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, grilled steaks, and a fruit salad.
2. He also hosed down my corrugated metal for me so that we can start figuring out how we are going to display my collages at the Create Cafe.
3. My friend Kevin stopped by tonight and we walked RR around the neighborhood. It was cloudy and we could see lightning in the distance.
4. Today RR's vet lowered his prednisone dose to the lowest amount it can be before she discontinues it! He'll probably be on it another month at least and then we'll try to take him off, assuming his labs remain stable.
5. I met a really nice lady today in Green Valley. I was there to give her information about hospice for her husband.
6. Last night I admitted another patient to hospice. It was a complicated admission as he was already in the dying process as he was discharged from the hospital, yesterday at 6 pm. I spent most of today trying to get orders, dealing with our pharmacy, our supply company, our on-call nurse and our on-call administrator to try to orchestrate his care. Then at 6pm the on-call nurse called to tell me that the patient had passed away. "He couldn't have had a more peaceful death, and it was because you worked so hard to get him what he needed." I don't know if that's true, I always hope my work will be of comfort to patients and their families, but you rarely really know. What really struck me was how kind it was of Kirk (the on-call nurse) to say that to me. It was so generous of him to pay attention to how hard I had tried.
7. Tomorrow morning Mead and I are going to yoga and then doing crafts. Remember how I always apologize for my photographs? She offered to take some pictures of my work for me! She is an awesome photographer--she has this way of taking pictures that I find really unique and beautiful. I feel so grateful that she is going to use her creative eye to take these photos. I'll post them as soon as I can!
8. Only a few days until I see my family!
9. I'm still listening to that great audio book: Be Grateful to Everyone by Pema Chodron. I would recommend it to anyone who sees kindness/compassion as a spiritual practice. When I graduated from college and everyone was asking me what I wanted to be, all I could think of was kind. I wonder if a lot of people with liberal arts degrees feel that way... I just wanted to love the world as best I could (and still do). I didn't see any ads posted for "compassionate beings" so I wound my way around--doing Americorps, interpreting for Spanish speakers, doing skills training for developmentally delayed adults, teaching yoga and then attending nursing school. Up until this job I would say that nursing has been (for the most part) a major set back in this area because I have spent so much time rushing and fighting, I had never felt so distant from my intention to be kind. I'm glad to say now that in this job I see it as my primary responsibility to be kind, and to listen to people who need a good listening to. So I would recommend this book to anyone who shares this ideal in their heart.

1. Green smoothies

Five things I am grateful for today
1. 4 hours of morning crafting
2. Yummy taco date with my honey to Boca tacos. We LOVE that place!
3. I bought three more pieces of rusty corrugated metal for my display from Gerson's the used building supply place in South Tucson. I am most grateful to Eric for helping me pick them out, plan my display and then knowing what we needed from Ace Hardware to build it. I think it's going to look really neat!
4. The kid who always helps me at Gerson's is so nice. I have grown kind of attached to him and he is leaving next week for UCLA. It just won't be the same without him because he takes the time to listen to my full schemes and then helps me figure out what I need to make them happen. Then he remembers the schemes even though I only come in once every few months. He is so sweet and positive. I am so glad he is going to UCLA, I am sure he is going to make the world a better place. Don't you sometimes think that the greatest impact we make isn't through our careers so much as the small kindnesses we share with others?
5. Eric is making dinner for me right now while I rest on my laurels. Life is good.

Five things I am grateful for today
1. Celebrated a work friend's birthday at the Cheesecake Factory for lunch. Their bbq ranch chicken salad is SO delicious.
2. A fun night of playing rummy at Crave Coffee Bar with an old friend
3. Making major progress toward finishing up my art for the Flag Yoga Festival. Mmm, I can't wait for the festival!
4. This morning I took my sewing machine in and guess what was messed up? Yep, operator error. Haha! So it's fixed! And guess what? It's way easier to use now that I know a few little tricks...like the importance of having the presser foot attached! HA! I wonder where it went... still haven't found the original one, luckily I have a spare. Anyway, I hate sewing a lot less now.

Five (+8) things I am grateful for today
1. Good sleep last night with neat dreams
2. Yummy breakfast
3. I had fun at work.
4. Turkey reuben with cranberry slaw for lunch
5. A nice storm to watch while making and eating seaweed/veggie wraps (seaweed, raw ginger, thinly sliced carrots and red pepper, avocado, sesame seeds, and Bragg's Liquid Aminos) for dinner
6. The temperature dropped around 20-25 degrees so Pickleypickley and I went out for a walk in the aftermath of the storm. It was still raining but not hard--like little kisses. I love going for a walk in the rain wearing a tank top and being perfectly comfortable.
7. Three hours of crafts--sewed a tablecloth, worked on a painting, and worked on prayer flags, (I found ten more sets that I started in 2008 or 2009!) I would just like to say that I really hate sewing. It is my intention to be positive in this blog, so let's just say, I love crafts, especially not sewing! I think I would like it more if I had my sewing machine tuned up so now it's sitting by the door before I screw up any more projects (2 more tablecloths to go, by the way).
8. When my sewing machine made horrible sounds and refused to work, I found the manual, read it and then took the darn thing apart to clean it and oil it. Then I put it back together and it worked much better. This may seem like a small undertaking, and it was really...but for me it was kind of a big deal. I am generally not handy, and I don't put myself in too many situation where I need to be. I wish I were, I wish I cared more. But I don't, so that being said, this was pretty neat.
9. So far seven people have RSVP-d yes to come to see my art at the Create Cafe!on July 22nd! (Yes Eric, you count! Even if you are a Spellmonster volunteer!)
10. This humidity is doing wonders for my hair. Humidity and this hair cut are meant to be friends, I guess. It made it pokey in just the right way.
11. I cleaned our floors tonight. God, I love having clean floors.
12. I forgot to mention the other day that my dad's friends are holding a second annual golf tournament in his honor next month. It benefits cancer research. It does my heart good that other people are still thinking about him and loving him too.
13. Time for bed! My bed is one of my very favorite places. Good night, World. <3 <3 <3

13. Time for bed! My bed is one of my very favorite places. Good night, World. <3 <3 <3

Five things and a sign
1. This has been such a great weekend. Yesterday was my favorite yoga class and besides that I did crafts almost all day. Mead came to yoga with me and then we crafted.
2. Last night's monsoon--it is so much cooler now!
3. Work is going well so far today. I've seen three home health patients and gone out on two calls for hospice. Busy bee!
4. I found the perfect fabric to make my tablecloths for my booth.
5. I am so grateful to live in this free and wonderful country.

Spellmonster at the Create Cafe!
Come on out July 22nd, 2011 from 5-8 pm and support a great local restaurant, The Create Cafe while having some fun with me! They have great vegetarian food as well as a bunch of gluten free options. Or a cheeseburger, or salad, whatever you want, Kid. There will likely be some sort of live music and I'll be displaying a bunch of my recent collages. You could even take one home and have your own little Spellmonster! I hope to see you there!
Five plus one things I am grateful for today
1. A nice relaxing day
2. 10 hours of sleep last night
3. This afternoon I went over to my friend Cynthia's house to do crafts. We had pizza and salad and natural root beer for dinner. I made close to a zillion flower hair clips. Okay, maybe not a zillion--closer to 60. She is so fun to be around. Positive, inspiring, kind. I am lucky to count her as my friend.
4. Tomorrow is Sunday, a "real" day off. Today I was on call for admissions and Monday I am the on call nurse for the agency. So tomorrow is...you guessed it, Sunday To Relax.
5. There is some great lightning in the sky right now. Monsoons are beginning, yippee!
6. I tried to de-clutter our house this morning. Less clutter makes it way easier to relax. I wish I could get rid of it once and for all!

Five things I am grateful for today
1. I am so grateful to have this job. I love it. Today I went and admitted a wonderful lady. She was very open, deep and spiritual. We sat and chatted for a couple of hours about hospice, life and death. It was such a privilege.
2. A good (though short) workout at the gym
3. Yummy leftovers in the fridge
4. My mom
5. I'm exhausted and going to bed right now.

I love today
Today was Eric and my date day and it was wonderful. We ate a yummy breakfast of crumpet breakfast sandwiches and peaches and nectarines. We set up my tent canopy as practice before the Flagstaff Yoga Festival. We hung around and did some nothing. We made dinner together and it was delicious. Then we went to see "I am"--have you seen it? If not, it is SO worth your time. It was inspiring and fun to watch. After that we came home and he helped me paint frames and finish up the prayer flags for the past four hours. I sure have enjoyed his company all day!
So much progress is being made for the upcoming festival! I only need to make about 30 more collages, one painting and a bunch of barrettes. After that it's just a matter of little stuff to make the booth itself feel welcoming. If anybody has any good ideas about that, I'm all ears.
Yawn. Night night.
