Five things I am grateful for today

1. Last night at midnight E and I rode our cruisers around the neighborhood by the light of the moon. It was very easily the best time I have had all week. It was nice and cool, there weren't any cars out, mmm, it was wonderful!
2. Before the bike ride I had drawing class. It was great as always. We drew a sheet with a spotlight on it that was pinned up on the wall looking crinkly and with lots of folds. Challenging, for sure.
3. All week one of the people in my Compassionate Communication practice group and I have been emailing. The conversation is inspiring and deeply helpful.
4. Grilled cheese sandwiches, green salad, and watermelon, grapes and blueberries for lunch.
5. This evening I picked up Mead's CSA and then wrote for awhile and drank iced tea at Epic Cafe. So many tomatoes! I love tomatoes!!! I think I will go eat one right now.

Many things I am grateful for today

1. Thursday afternoon and evening smelled like monsoons, and even though it didn't rain where I was, the smell was intoxicating and reminded me of the promise of the upcoming rain and storms. Yes yes monsoons, come soak our desert!

2. Blueberries, grapes, watermelon, nectarines and peaches. Mmm, I love summer fruit!

3. Two good home visits yesterday. One in particular in which the patient was scared she was having a stroke. It was nice to have a good neuro background to bring along and help reassure her that in fact she was not exhibiting a single stroke symptom or any neurological deficits that needed emergent care. I am grateful for my training.

4. Mead stopped by for a quick dinner. It was delicious--both seeing her and what we ate.

5. Roofrauff and I went to Udall Park to go for a walk last night.

6. Drawing.

7. Thursday night my compassionate communication class met without our teacher as she is taking the next month off from teaching in Tucson. There were only three of us but it was really fun--and it felt like we had much forward movement in our learning.

8. I learned how to irrigate a urinary catheter this week. Slowly but surely I am learning this trade. What was particularly nice about learning this was there was no expectation that I should already know it. Just gentle instructions and clarification to make sure I understood. Nursing is hard because there are so many details, bits of knowledge and skills that we are held accountable for. I appreciate the gentle learning experiences most.

9. I took this test (the first of the two options) at the repeated request of my compassionate communication teacher. I generally am not a fan of personality tests, horoscopes, or anything that attempts to use an external system to categorize people by personality traits. I really don't like the idea of people defining themselves by their limitations. I have always loved the quote from Richard Bach, "Argue your limitations and sure enough they're yours." However, this enneagram concept has been repeatedly brought up as a potentially useful tool by a few people who I really respect. So I took it, and lo and behold, it is interesting food for thought. I like it in terms of having some quick insight into what needs a person might be trying to meet as they approach the situations in their life. I think it would be helpful to know your own and also the numbers of those close to you. It sort of speeds up the process of empathy if that makes sense...? If you read this, take the test and want to chat about it, leave me a comment!

10. Last night I went grocery shopping. I am really grateful that we have enough to eat--that we can eat well without worrying that next week we might not. In the past few days I have been reminded of the choices that so many people have to make between resources---do we buy food, pay rent, buy medicine, keep the house warm/cool enough to be comfortable? This week at work I watched someone try to make those choices. It is always painful to watch others suffer. I remember hurting over this often when I had my Americorps position at the food bank way back when. It hurts not to be able to do more to help people. At the same time, I am so VERY grateful for my jobs, that I am not having to make those choices right now and have never known what it is like to lose a home, or go without food or medicine, or really be uncomfortable. And so I enter my hospital work week with this in mind-- deep gratitude for having enough. My hope is to carry that gratitude with me and not get caught up in anything else.

11. This week has been a little easier than the weeks and months before it. Something somewhere in my brain let go and I have been feeling a bit lighter. There is relief in this. (Dad, I still miss you constantly.)

Five things I am grateful for today

1. This week has been great for home health--I have more work than I have had in a long time, early January, to be specific. One of the patients is a man I helped treat when I was a new grad RN. I really liked him back then, so it is a pleasure to be doing daily dressing changes for him this week.

2. Last night Mead and I went to hear her friend Kate speak about the emotional journey of developing your art. It was fun on several levels--the topic itself is of great interest, of course. It was a potluck with great food, and lots of it was homemade--nothing better than a potluck with homemade goodness. Kate played some music (her primary medium). There was a good discussion afterward that made me think more deeply about artistic commitment.

3. Last night after the art salon Mead and I sat and talked for a long time. We talked about art, life, friendships, family, and some other stuff. I am really grateful to have her as a friend and also that we see each other almost every week. So many of the people I love most in this world live so far away. I am glad to have a few close friends here in town.

4. Two home visits today.

5. Strawberries.

Five things I am grateful for today

1. Dates (2) last night and today. Last night E took me out on the town, we went to Armitage at La Encantada. He had panko breaded salmon with veggies and roasted red potatoes, I had cheese tortellini with grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, crimini mushrooms, and an awesome pesto. Mmm, it was so delicious we had to order bread to soak up every last drop of sauce. Today we went to Canyon's Crown while Discount Tire fixed my flat for free.

2. Discount Tire fixed my flat for free.

3. My anatomical heart model came today.

4. Drawing class.

5. Tonight E and I are lurking around watching episodes of The Office and laughing hysterically. I love The Office. I love lurking around with Eric. I love tonight.

Five things I am grateful for today

1. Air conditioning.

2. Friday my new friend Rene (previously mentioned as one of my very favorite techs at work) and I are going to get massages and eat at El Charro. I am so excited!

3. I am about to go to a coffee shop (for even better air conditioning!) to drink iced tea and make a list and then read my book. And tonight I think I'll go to the gym and then draw, draw, draw. That is assuming I can keep my energy up...

4. My anatomical heart model will be here tomorrow according to the shipping tracker!!! Be still my heart... Ha ha, I couldn't resist.

5. A good visit with my one and only home health patient.

Five things I am grateful for today

1. I am settled back in here at home. It feels so good to be with Eric and my sweet Roofrauff. Yesterday RR and I went on two walks.

2. E made me lunch yesterday and today. Like I said, it's good being home. That dude can seriously grill up some good food. Wow. Not to mention he is super cute, funny and great in pretty much every way. And he rubbed my feet for what seemed like forever when I first got home on Sunday night.

3. Two new shirts. The red one and the blue one. Mmm, yes, I love them.

4. Drawing is such a fascinating experience in watching my own psychology unfold, the constant critiquing and monologue going through my head as I try to render what I am looking at, the way I see things when I am not really LOOKING at them, or when I am. There is a steady stream of thought and I sort of internally shrug and just keep drawing. So far none of the thoughts have been useful. Tonight was class number three of eight--we worked on value--light and dark. These concepts are interesting to me, I like the idea of negative space. The teacher continues to be very helpful and supportive. At a time when I am mostly wanting to just be alone this class is a good social outlet--I am around people yet interact only a little. I continually struggle to be patient-- so all in all I think it is VERY good that I am in this class, even though I am frequently pretty uncomfortable and squirmy in my head.

5. Before art class I met up with Mead for a little while for iced tea and a chat. I am grateful for my friends who are so patient, gentle, kind and nurturing. Thanks guys. I wish some of my closer friends who live outside of Tucson could be closer in proximity.

Speaking of wishing for things, here are some of my current wishes:
For Wendy to decide to move to Tucson. Yeah, YOU Wendy.
To be able to draw well.
For my inspiration to wander back in and actually stay.
To go camping near trees and water.
For some Mexican wedding cookies.
For ease.
For my anatomical heart model to get here tomorrow.
For everyone I love to be free from suffering. And everyone else too.
For strong healthy knees.

Good night loved ones. Time to read my book.

Five things I am grateful for today

1. My mama spoiled me rotten with amazing meals and a four night stay in San Francisco. We ate well, and had a really good time.
2. Last Tuesday Eric made us a picnic of sandwiches, cut carrots, apples, blueberries, chips and cookies to take to Mt. Lemmon. The three of us celebrated Roofrauff's adoption-birthday by playing around and having fun.
3. Then Tuesday night E had everything ready when we got home to make us a DELICIOUS, delicious dinner. Mmm, it was so good.
4. A healthy body.
5. In San Francisco I had the chance to catch up with some friends from elementary school at an old friend's wedding. It was so sweet, so fun. It's wonderful to see how they have changed and how they haven't, and what they are doing with their lives--they were always really creative and the range of possibilities extends far and wide between them. It definitely inspired me to be with them, and made my heart happy.

I could write a whole post on this most unique and wonderful wedding, however my flight is about to board heading home to Tucson. Suffice to say it was an event of early 20th century epic proportion.

Some things I am grateful for today

1. Right now I am lurking at Borders. Not too many places that are open at 11pm and quiet. I just sat and looked at the craft magazines for awhile, it was delicious. And considering we don't have internet at home right now, I am very grateful to have it here!

2. Today is my mom's birthday. It's also the year anniversary of my dad's diagnosis. I am glad that my mom's birthday was a gentle one, hard as I am sure it was for her.

3. I made breakfast burritos for the weekend/my work week.

4. Regina came over and we had a nice chat.

5. I went to the gym tonight and enjoyed a Grey's Anatomy episode while on the elliptical.

6. There are three people waiting for the new Stephanie Meyer book to come out at midnight. One is this twenty year old looking dude dressed in white with a white hoodie some sort of sword or something. That makes me happy. I love it when the weirdos come out of the woodwork, especially when it's not hipsters trying to be cool.

7. I am really enjoying the book I am reading right now. One from the compassionate communication package I ordered last month.

8. I got a really good night's sleep last night.

9. Tomorrow I am making tacos. I freakin' love tacos. Love them.

10. I washed RR yesterday and he smells good and is so soft. Here is a picture of him snuggling a towel right after. How totally cute is he? Yeah, super cute.

11. Wendy's encouragement.

12. Blueberries.

13. The blog Zen Habits.

14. Air conditioning.

15. Wednesday I leave for San Francisco!

Five things I am grateful for today

1. For the first time in a whole month E and I had two days off together. I loved every second of being with him. On Memorial Day his mom came over for dinner, E grilled chicken and his amazing corn, and I made green chili macaroni and cheese with grilled red peppers and sweet onions in it, also fruit salad and a green salad with watercress. E's mama brought her famous Ozark pudding. Yum. It was great being together and we played Scrabble. I love Scrabble and haven't been playing nearly as much as I used to. It felt like good family time.

2. Last week in drawing class we had to introduce ourselves and talk about our art experience and tell what we hoped to get out of the class. So I talked about my anatomical heart paintings and how I want to be a better painter, to have my painting look like the ideas from which they originated. The teacher asked me to bring in my paintings next class. So last night was class and I showed her my tiny works while we were on a break. She had the neat idea of getting an anatomical model to work from--so I am ordering one on Amazon today. Not only will this help my drawing and painting, I think it will be a fun addition to my studio decor. Here is what it looks like: anatomical heart model.

3. While I was lurking on Amazon I also found The Artistic Anatomy of Trees for only $3.50! Trees and anatomical hearts, my favorite things to paint. Yippee!

4. My days off.

5. Heading to the gym now, grateful for a healthy body.
