I've noticed sometimes when I practice yoga that I space out and go through all of my poses pretty quickly. I remembered during my teacher training at Kripalu in 2002 one of the instructors said a good way to stay present is to hold each pose for a minimum of five slow, deep breaths. I have been practicing this in the past few days and have found it tremendously helpful in keeping me present and in the poses for a longer amount of time. It's easy to say "focus on the breath" but for me that can be too vague and too much to ask. I am however, a pretty good counter. So I just count my five slow breaths, trying to make them as gentle and smooth as possible. And then slowly ease out of the posture. It feels good.
